  • A Groundbreaking, Witty, Wild Ride

This show fills a long- ignored void in media representation with wit, action, high quality writing, and responsible storytelling. In a time where many of the new shows and movies released follow tired tropes, lackluster plot lines, and show poor representation, Wynonna Earp breathes new life into not only the science fiction genre, but proves that the small screen can tell stories just as big as any blockbuster. Not having a Game of Thrones- size budget doesn’t stop this cast and crew from clearly putting their heart and soul into every episode they make, and in the end it is this kind of dedication and emotional investment that creates long lasting stories that make the kind of impact on viewers that keeps them coming back. This is what makes viewers from season 1 recruit new viewers for the ongoing season 2, and what makes them recruit their friends to start watching. At its heart, the cast of Wynonna Earp endears the viewer from the start, with each and every character being as fleshed out and dynamic (and sometimes frustrating) as a good friend can be. Not one character is reduced to a tired trope or lazy stock characterization, which is seen too often in modern productions. From a representation standpoint, Wynonna Earp gives women and the LGBTQ community front- and- center characters that are easy to identify with and become invested in like the Earp sisters and Nicole Haught. In season 2, the show is also expanding on the racial diversity of their cast with new characters Jeremy Chetri and Rosita, in addition to beloved series regular Xavier Dolls. In a time when the safe thing to do is cast a white male lead with a hetrosexual love interest, Wynonna Earp dares to break boundaries, even if that does mean a slightly smaller audience. But what may be lacking in size is made up for in dedication, with fans of the show truly being in for the whole ride. In a modern age of growing diversity where appealing to a wider audience is more and more important for television networks to remain relevant when competing with online streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, Wynonna Earp helps to bring Syfy and Space into the future of storytelling. There will always be some groups resistant to the trend towards greater diversity in media, but this resistance is not the majority, and should not and ultimately will not stall progress. I am glad to see that Syfy is embracing a larger and more diverse audience in what is historically a very male dominated, straight genre. The prospective growing pains of pushing a groundbreaking show are well worth it, as Wynonna Earp has proven, with Syfy becoming a network that can be counted on for progressive, modern, unique content as it shoots ahead of competitor networks in the march towards the future of television. I look forward to seeing what the rest of season 2, and the well- deserved season 3 have to bring to the table. And I will be there every Friday night ready to watch.

Wynonna Earp is, without a doubt, one of most funny, clever, kick-a** and touching series showing today... It is full of strong, complex and superbly-written characters, fun and well-crafted action and cinematography, an is bolstered by a team of truly amazing writers, actors and staff! It is always a joy to watch the new episodes, and I find myself going back to watch old ones over and over... Thank you to everyone involved in this project!
